Maaco Paint Job Cost in 2026

Maaco's advertised tier pricing is honest. The full-quote price is almost always 30-50% higher because of upcharges. Here is each tier broken down with the realistic out-the-door cost, when Maaco is the right answer, and when an independent body shop is the better call at the same money.

Updated May 2026

Maaco's four tiers, real-world priced

The advertised price on Maaco's published tier pricing is what your car would cost if it arrived in perfect condition with no body prep needed and you accepted jambs-masked-shut. Real cars rarely meet that bar. The realistic price after typical upcharges is 30-50% higher.

Basic Service

Advertised: $599 - $899After upcharges: $899 - $1,399

What's included: Single-stage acrylic enamel. One color coat, no clear. Door jambs masked shut. Spot prep on visible damage only (the rest sanded to scuff, not bare metal). 1-year limited warranty.

Typical upcharges: Body prep package ($150-$300), surface rust treatment ($100-$200), edge sealing ($75-$150).

Best for: Beater car worth under $3,000, project car, fleet vehicle. Lasts 2-5 years before noticeable fade or peel.

Preservation

Advertised: $999 - $1,399After upcharges: $1,299 - $1,899

What's included: Urethane-based paint with separate clear coat. Two color coats, one clear coat. Door jambs still masked shut. More thorough surface prep. 3-year limited warranty.

Typical upcharges: Body prep ($150-$300), rust treatment ($100-$200), jamb work add-on ($150-$300).

Best for: Daily-driver sedan worth $5,000-$15,000. Looks decent for 4-7 years if regularly washed and waxed.

Premium Service

Advertised: $1,499 - $1,999After upcharges: $1,799 - $2,499

What's included: Urethane base coat plus two clear coats. Door jambs included on most quotes. Better color match (custom mix to OEM code). 5-year limited warranty.

Typical upcharges: Bodywork (dent / chip filling, $200-$500), wet-sand and polish package ($200-$400).

Best for: Late-model daily driver worth $15,000-$30,000. Best Maaco-tier choice if budget allows. 5-10 year lifespan.

Diamond Service (where offered)

Advertised: $2,499 - $2,999After upcharges: $2,799 - $3,499

What's included: Not available at every Maaco location. Premium urethane with three clear coats, wet-sand between coats, polish to high gloss. Jambs included. 5-year warranty plus paint protection coating.

Typical upcharges: Major bodywork ($300-$800), surface rust repair ($150-$300).

Best for: Higher-value daily driver where you want chain-shop pricing but body-shop quality. Comparable to a budget independent shop quote at similar price.

The five common upcharges

Every Maaco quote has an advertised price and a final price. The gap is filled by these five line items, in roughly this order of frequency.

Body prep package

Almost universal at every Maaco location. The advertised price assumes the car arrives with no scratches deeper than the clear coat, no surface rust, no chips deeper than the base coat. Real cars rarely qualify. The body prep package covers sanding and feathering of pre-existing damage, surface rust treatment, and chip filling. Typical add-on: $150-$300 on a sedan.

Jamb work add-on

Maaco's basic and preservation tiers mask door jambs, trunk jamb, and fuel filler door shut. The advertised price does not include painting them. If you want any of those areas painted (mandatory on a color change), the add-on is $150-$300. Premium and Diamond tiers usually include jambs.

Bodywork

Maaco shops do basic bodywork (dent removal, plastic-bumper crack repair, surface chip filling) but it is billed separately from the paint package. Expect $50-$200 per minor dent, $200-$500 per significant repair (large dent, panel skin work).

Surface rust treatment

Any visible surface rust at quote time gets an additional charge. Maaco does not do cut-and-weld rust repair (you would go to a body shop for that), but they can sand back to clean metal and seal. Typical add-on: $100-$200 per affected area on a daily driver. Multiple rust spots add up.

Color and finish premium

Basic single-stage solid colors are included in the base price. Custom OEM colors (especially metallic, pearl, or tri-coat) add $200-$500. Some locations charge extra for unusual colors that they have to special-order or mix from scratch.

The fix for upcharge surprise is asking for an itemized written quote at the inspection visit, not the phone estimate. Maaco's franchise model means the location manager has discretion over which upcharges apply. Get them in writing before drop-off.

When Maaco is the right call

Maaco is honest budget paint. There are real scenarios where it is the best financial answer.

  • Beater daily driver under $5,000: a $600-$900 Maaco basic respray on a $3,000 Civic makes the car look reasonable without overspending. The math works.
  • Project car waiting for full restoration: $800 Maaco preservation tier as a primer-and-protective layer until you can afford the full restoration. Buys 3-5 years of weather protection.
  • Fleet vehicle (lawn care truck, delivery van) where appearance matters less than uniform color: Maaco basic in fleet quantity is often discounted further.
  • Car you are flipping at $5,000-$10,000 price point: Maaco Premium for $1,800-$2,500 can add $1,500-$3,000 to resale on a cosmetically faded car. Margin works if the car needs nothing else.
  • Insurance write-off you bought back as salvage: bring the cosmetics back to driver-quality cheaply.

When Maaco is the wrong call

Equally important: knowing when Maaco's pricing model breaks down compared to the alternatives.

  • Late-model car worth $25,000+: Maaco Premium will be visibly inferior to a mid-tier independent body shop at similar price. The premium-tier independent body shop work justifies its own price.
  • Color change on a high-value car: jamb work, engine bay work, and trunk jamb work are all separately upcharged at Maaco. The total often approaches an independent body shop quote and the result is not as good.
  • Show or concours quality: not what Maaco does. Their best tier (Diamond) is well above their average but still well below independent specialty paint shops.
  • Car with significant rust or bodywork needs: Maaco does not do structural bodywork (cut-and-weld, panel replacement). You will end up at a body shop anyway.
  • Anyone who has lost trust over a previous Maaco experience: not worth giving them another chance if the first try went badly. The variance between Maaco locations is significant.

The clearest alternative comparison is the mid-tier body shop pricing page which covers what $1,500-$5,000 buys at an independent shop versus what it buys at Maaco. For show-quality work, the show-quality cost page explains where the premium goes.

How Maaco compares to the alternatives

At the same price point, here is the honest comparison:

Maaco Basic ($899-$1,399 real) versus a budget independent body shop: Maaco wins on predictability and warranty. The budget independent might be 10-20% cheaper but quality varies wildly. For a Civic worth $3,000, Maaco Basic is the safer bet.

Maaco Preservation ($1,299-$1,899 real) versus a reputable independent body shop at $1,500-$1,800: the independent wins. Better prep, better paint application, better color match. The independent body shop has a real painter, not a paint-line technician.

Maaco Premium ($1,799-$2,499 real) versus a mid-tier independent body shop at $2,500-$3,500: the independent body shop's premium tier is dramatically better. If you have $2,000-$3,500 to spend, the independent body shop is the right call. Maaco Premium is a fine product for the right car, but the independent at this price tier is in a different league.

Maaco Diamond ($2,799-$3,499 real) versus an independent body shop premium tier: competitive. This is where Maaco is actually competing with body-shop quality. The Diamond tier (where offered) is genuinely good work. Still slightly behind a top independent, but reasonable for the price.

Maaco paint job cost FAQ

How much does a Maaco paint job actually cost in 2026?+

After typical upcharges, Maaco Basic Service runs $899-$1,399 (advertised $599-$899). Preservation runs $1,299-$1,899 (advertised $999-$1,399). Premium runs $1,799-$2,499 (advertised $1,499-$1,999). Diamond (where offered) runs $2,799-$3,499. The advertised prices assume no body prep, no rust, no jamb work, no bodywork. Real-world cars usually need at least body prep, so the after-upcharge price is the realistic budget.

What's the difference between Maaco's tiers?+

Basic is single-stage acrylic enamel (one color coat, no clear), 1-year warranty. Preservation is urethane with one clear coat, 3-year warranty. Premium is urethane with two clear coats, jambs included, 5-year warranty. Diamond (not at every location) adds wet-sand between clear coats and a paint protection coating, with a 5-year warranty. Each tier roughly doubles the paint lifespan of the one below.

Does Maaco do a good job?+

Maaco is honest budget paint. The Basic tier is what it claims to be: cheap, fast, looks fine for 2-5 years on a daily driver. The Preservation and Premium tiers are noticeably better but still not equivalent to an independent body shop at similar price. Quality varies significantly between Maaco locations because the franchises are independently operated. Always check Google reviews for the specific franchise before booking.

What does Maaco not include in the advertised price?+

Body prep (sanding, feathering, chip filling) is almost universally an upcharge. Door jambs are masked shut on Basic and Preservation tiers (extra charge to paint). Surface rust treatment is separate. Bodywork (dent removal, panel repair) is billed separately. Custom or premium colors (metallic, pearl, tri-coat) add $200-$500. Most cars need at least body prep, so the realistic price is 30-50% above the advertised price.

How long does a Maaco paint job last?+

Basic Service single-stage paint lasts 2-5 years before noticeable fade or clear peel. Preservation urethane with one clear coat lasts 4-7 years. Premium with two clear coats lasts 5-10 years. Diamond service can last 8-12 years with proper care. Lifespan depends heavily on UV exposure: a garage-kept Maaco job lasts twice as long as one parked outside in the Southwest.

Is Maaco better than a local independent body shop?+

At the same price point, the independent body shop is usually better. A $1,800 Maaco Premium and a $1,800 independent body shop will produce noticeably different results: the independent typically has better prep, fewer overspray issues, better color match, and longer-lasting work. Maaco's advantage is predictable pricing and a national warranty. The independent's advantage is quality. For a daily driver, the independent wins on long-term value.

What's the warranty on a Maaco paint job?+

Basic Service: 1-year limited warranty. Preservation: 3-year limited warranty. Premium: 5-year limited warranty. Diamond: 5-year warranty plus paint protection coating. Warranty covers manufacturing defects (peeling, lifting, blistering) but not damage (chips, scratches, fading from UV exposure). The warranty is honored at any Maaco location nationally, which is genuinely useful if you move or travel.
