Maaco Paint Job Packages (2026)

Maaco is the largest auto paint chain in the US with 400+ locations. They offer three tiers. This is a neutral assessment of what you actually get at each level.

Maaco Basic

$500-$800

What is included

  • Light sanding of existing paint
  • Single-stage enamel paint (1-2 coats)
  • No primer on most panels
  • Jambs and edges NOT painted
  • No dent or rust repair
  • 1-2 day turnaround

What they skip

Primer on most areas, door jamb painting, trim removal, detailed masking

Verdict

Acceptable for vehicles worth under $3,000 or pre-sale cosmetic fix. Visible overspray and orange peel are common.

Maaco Preferred

$1,000-$1,500

What is included

  • More thorough sanding
  • Primer coat on all panels
  • Base coat + clear coat (2 coats each)
  • Door jambs painted on most panels
  • Basic trim removal
  • 2-3 day turnaround

What they skip

Detailed body work, rust repair, multiple clear coat layers, wet sanding

Verdict

Reasonable for daily drivers worth $5,000-$10,000 where a decent appearance matters but perfection does not.

Maaco Premium

$1,500-$2,500

What is included

  • Thorough surface prep and sanding
  • Full primer coat
  • Base coat + clear coat (3+ coats)
  • All jambs and edges painted
  • Some trim removal
  • 3-5 day turnaround

What they skip

Bare metal strip, extensive body work, wet sanding to mirror finish, custom color matching

Verdict

The best value at a chain shop. Still not equivalent to a good independent body shop at the same price point.

Budget

Maaco, Earl Scheib, national chains, discount body shops

$500-$1,500

Expected lifespan: 2-5 years

Prep work

Light sanding of existing finish. No stripping. Minimal masking. May paint over minor imperfections.

Paint application

Single-stage enamel or budget base coat/clear coat. 1-2 coats. No wet sanding or polishing.

Labor: 8-25 hours

When this level makes sense

  • Beater cars, daily drivers worth under $5,000
  • Fleet vehicles where appearance is secondary
  • Pre-sale cosmetic improvement to increase asking price by $500-$1,000
  • Temporary fix while saving for a better job later

What to inspect after a budget job

  • Check for overspray on trim, glass edges, and rubber seals
  • Look for orange peel texture (bumpy surface like orange skin)
  • Open all doors and check if jambs were painted
  • Inspect for runs or sags, especially on vertical panels
  • Check masking lines around headlights and tail lights
Mid-Range

Local body shops, independent auto painters, quality-focused independents

$1,500-$5,000

Expected lifespan: 5-10 years

Prep work

Proper sanding with multiple grits. Primer coat applied. Minor dents and scratches repaired. All trim removed or carefully masked. Door jambs sanded and prepped.

Paint application

Quality base coat/clear coat urethane. 2-3 coats base, 2-3 coats clear. Color-matched to factory code.

Labor: 25-60 hours

When this level makes sense

  • Daily drivers worth $10,000-$30,000
  • Insurance repairs after an accident
  • Cars with fading or peeling clear coat that are otherwise in good shape
  • Vehicles you plan to keep for 5+ more years

How to find a good local shop

  • Ask for referrals from local mechanics or auto parts stores
  • Check Google reviews, look specifically for photo reviews
  • Visit the shop and look at cars in progress, not just finished examples
  • Ask how many coats of clear they apply (should be at least 2-3)
  • Ask if they remove trim or tape over it (removing is better)
High-End

Specialist body shops, custom painters, high-end collision centers

$5,000-$10,000

Expected lifespan: 10-15+ years

Prep work

Full strip to bare metal or extremely thorough sanding. All rust cut out and welded. Body panels straightened. Epoxy primer, body filler where needed, sealer coat.

Paint application

Premium urethane base coat/clear coat. 3-4 coats base, 4-5 coats clear. Wet sanded between coats. Machine polished to mirror finish.

Labor: 50-100 hours

When this level makes sense

  • Collector cars and appreciating classics
  • High-value vehicles ($30,000+) where paint quality affects resale
  • Cars with significant rust or body damage that needs proper repair
  • Enthusiast daily drivers where you want show-quality appearance

What separates high-end from mid-range

  • Full strip to bare metal vs sanding over existing paint
  • All rust is cut out and new metal welded in, not just treated with converter
  • Multiple rounds of sanding between coats (400-grit, 600-grit, 800-grit, 1200-grit)
  • Machine polishing and buffing adds 8-15 hours but creates mirror finish
  • All trim, glass, and rubber removed rather than masked
Show Quality

Restoration specialists, concours-level shops, custom builders

$10,000-$20,000+

Expected lifespan: Lifetime with maintenance

Prep work

Complete bare metal strip. Every panel removed. All body work done to perfection. Metal treatment, epoxy primer, filler primer, guide coat, block sanding, sealer. Multiple rounds.

Paint application

Custom-mixed paint, often catalyzed urethane. 4-6+ coats base, multiple coats clear. Each coat wet sanded. Final compound and polish to mirror finish. Some shops do 10+ coats of clear.

Labor: 100-300+ hours

When this level makes sense

  • Classic car restorations aiming for concours judging
  • High-value collectors (cars worth $50,000+ where paint quality affects value)
  • Custom show cars built for display and competition
  • Passion projects where the process matters as much as the result

The show quality process

  1. 1.Complete disassembly: every panel, trim piece, and piece of glass removed
  2. 2.Chemical stripping or media blasting to bare metal
  3. 3.Metal treatment and rust prevention
  4. 4.Epoxy primer, block sanded, guide coat to find imperfections
  5. 5.Body filler applied and sanded to perfection (this alone takes days)
  6. 6.Sealer coat, then multiple base coats with sanding between each
  7. 7.Multiple clear coats, wet sanded with progressively finer grits
  8. 8.Final compound, polish, and wax to mirror finish
  9. 9.Timeline: typically 4-12 weeks of actual work

How to Evaluate a Quote

Green flags

  • Written estimate with line items for prep, materials, and labor
  • Shop shows you current work in progress
  • They ask about your timeline and quality expectations
  • Warranty on the work (1-3 years minimum for mid-range)
  • They mention removing trim rather than masking over it

Red flags

  • Verbal-only quotes with no written breakdown
  • Price seems too good for the quality level claimed
  • Will not let you see work in progress
  • Promises a 1-day turnaround for a mid-range job
  • No warranty or very short warranty (under 6 months)
